Come Holy Spirit, Renew the Face of the Earth

Sunday, May 23, 2021

By Most Rev. James A. Tamayo, Bishop of the Diocese of Laredo

My dearest brothers and sisters,

Tomorrow, May 23, 2021, is known as Pentecost, the day the Church was founded. We remember how the Holy Spirit descended upon each apostle, all of whom were gathered together in prayer as commanded by Jesus after his ascension into heaven. Jesus had instructed His apostles to wait together in Jerusalem until God had “fulfilled His promise.” The promise was that the apostles would not be alone in spreading the Good News—in forming the Church.

The Holy Spirit expelled the fear the apostles shared after they witnessed Jesus’s crucifixion granting them wisdom to understand the mission of our Lord and fortitude to go out and proclaim the Gospel. God has always prepared His people for the work He wishes for them to do. After sending Jesus, His only begotten Son, to teach us how to live through His words and by His example, God sent us the Holy Spirit in order that we may continue the ministry that Jesus began on this earth.

Through the sacrament of confirmation, we are granted the same gifts of the Holy Spirit that were bestowed upon the apostles. How are you using those gifts to witness to your faith? Pray to the Holy Spirit that you may be empowered to follow God’s Word and share it with others. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom to understand what your specific mission is.

This world is filled with violence, tragedy, suffering, division and injustice. It is filled with sin. The Holy Spirit will guide you, just as with the apostles, so that as more people come to know God, there will be greater compassion for the least among us and an increase of peace throughout our world. Through a unified effort, the love of Christ will reign and expel all darkness. Strengthen your domestic church by making your home holy, and be an example of the love God has for each of His children in the way you treat your neighbors.

As we celebrate the birthday of the Church, let us resolve to be united as people of faith working toward the same mission. Come Holy Spirit, renew the face of the earth. Your prayers and involvement in your parish and in the diocese, make our Church a living witness to what God has promised: “I will be with you forever”…
