The Heart of Our Diocesan Church: Preservation Efforts of the San Agustín Cathedral Continue

Preservation of the San Agustín Cathedral has progressed amidst the pandemic. The Cathedral has been temporarily closed since November 2018 for substantial interior maintenance, restoration and liturgical renovation.

The following has been accomplished recently:

-Restoration of windows on both the north and south sides of the church,

-Installation of terrazzo on the floor of the church and wood flooring in the choir loft,

-Enhanced carpentry work,

-New restroom facilities,

-Efficient electrical wiring, and

-Liturgical enhancements including a new organ and pews.

            (See the accompanying photos below.)

The preservation of the existing church allows the cathedral to fulfill its proper role through the liturgies celebrated by the bishop, priests and all people within the seven counties that encompass the Diocese of Laredo.

Bishop Tamayo eagerly anticipates the reopening of the Cathedral later this year, confident that it will continue to unite us as one diocesan family.
