Humanitarian Crisis on our Border

Friday, May 17, 2019

On behalf of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Laredo, I would like to inform you on the humanitarian crisis we are facing on our border, especially since last Friday, May 10, 2019. Catholic Charities is leading this humanitarian crisis. During this week, they have received 1,540 immigrants at the Catholic Charities-La Frontera Shelter (1616 Callaghan St.). We have been informed by the Department of Homeland Security that this crisis will continue for an indefinite period of time. Everyday Customs and Border Protection are releasing over 220 migrants per day. We ask you for your support in two ways:

a)     You can donate some of the following items that are in great need:
Baby Bottles, Trash Bags (45 gallons & 13 gallons), Trash Cans (13 gallons), Detergent, Clorox, Bath Towels, Toilet Tissue and Baby Powder Formula (0-6 months & 6 months+). You may leave the items at the Chancery (Fiscal Office) Building during the week, or you may drop them off at Catholic Charities-La Frontera during the weekend.
b)     You can volunteer during the day by contacting Benjamin De la Garza at 956-220-3785. We need volunteers to help in the following positions and schedule:
Drivers from 6am to 3pm and from 1 pm to 1 Opm; telephone operators (Spanish required) from Sam to lpm and from lpm to 8pm; maintenance workers and housekeepers from 6am to 3pm and from 1 pm to 1 Opm.

The Diocese of Laredo is blessed to count on the support and the generosity of the faithful and diflerent organizations. Thank you in advance for your kindness in helping us in this humanitarian crisis. May the Lord be your best reward.
"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me ... " (Mt 25:35)
