Scouting Virtual Retreat

Wednesday, February 10, 2021

The Diocese of Laredo’s Catholic Committee on Scouting hosted a virtual religious retreat for Laredo Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts on Saturday, February 6, 2021.  The retreat marks the start for the scouts in their journey to earn the BSA Religious Medal Award.

The Most Reverend James A. Tamayo, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Laredo, opened the retreat with a blessing and advised the Scouts of the importance of being not only good Scouts, but also, good Catholics. A total of 100 Scouts attended the virtual retreat including 63 members of the Boy Scouts of America, 37 members of the Girl Scouts of America, their parents and committee members. Bishop Tamayo explained how the scouts are very much like St. Joseph in their service to others which fit with the focus of the retreat—Helping Others. Three seminarians from the Diocese of Laredo, who are studying at Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, spoke on the following topics: Helping People at All Times, Kindness Lifts Us All, and Blessed are the Generous. Each talk included prayer, the introduction of a Saint to model, scripture discussion, and a short video related to the topic

The Catholic Boy Scout and Girl Scout Religious Awards program is coordinated by the Diocese of Laredo’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in cooperation with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. Successful completion of the award requires the scouts to attend the retreat, as well as weekly classes over a three-month period.  During this time, the scouts undertake various educational activities to help them grow spiritually through community service and exploration of relationships with friends and family.

At the successful culmination of the awards requirement, the scouts will celebrate a Mass led by Bishop Tamayo where their achievements will be recognized. The Mass is scheduled for May 15, 2021 at 10:30 A.M. in the historic San Agustín Cathedral.

The Diocese of Laredo’s Catholic Committee on Scouting would like to thank Bishop Tamayo, the Diocese of Laredo, Father Michael De Leon, Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Seminarians Jose Antonio Perez, Jerry Gutierrez and Jose Luis Restrepo, the Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, David Chapa, Victor Chapa, and the Laredo Aztec District Scouting Community in making this great event possible. The Diocese of Laredo’s Catholic Committee on Scouting is led by Rudy Sanchez, Sr. Chair.

The Diocese of Laredo's Catholic Committee on Scouting hosted the annual retreat for scouts virtually this year.
